DONATIONS IN ACTION: SHERP

SHERP Facility in Maralal Kenya
Rafiki began raising funds for the SHERP orphanage in 2006.
The Samburu Handicap Education & Rehabilitation Programme
SHERP was founded in 1999, by teacher and child rights activist Grace Seneiya,
and has received over 118 disabled children with open arms, providing them with
education, medical care, and hope for a life full of new opportunities.
Disabled children in the Samburu region of Kenya are often considered to be a
liability to their nomadic families and many have suffered severe neglect by the
time they reach the steps to the SHERP centre.
Children at SHERP are given opportunities many have never dreamed possible.
A young deaf child can hear the sounds of Kenya again with hearing aids.
A blind child can read alongside other children using a Braille storybook. Children
with severe health issues can receive the care and medical attention they desperately
require.
The children of SHERP now enjoy a clean water supply from a well that was
completed in 2007. The well was made possible by generous donations from
Collingwood School in BC, Canada and a gala event held at the Los Angeles home
of Deborra Lee and Hugh Jackman.
